Preliminary remarks: “A tooth for a Cruise” and other obstacles.

I had put money aside for a root canal, but then the tooth had to come out, which was covered by my insurance. “That money is going for something fun,” I decided. In the spring, the Open Center advertised “A Cruise to Paradise,” a seven day cruise to Bermuda, including classes in yoga, meditation, health and well-being. Vacations have been rare during the past ten years. The simple idea of getting away, and not being responsible for any planning and organization was tempting - I hardly cared where we were going. As fate would have it, the price match was perfect, so I booked the cruise, and the discount I got for my volunteer job at the OC even provided some spending money.

Then, hurricane Irene appeared on the horizon. “Stay home, even if they decide to go, “ wrote a worried friend - we were supposed to leave last Sunday, the day when the storm was expected to hit New York. I didn’t know what to think, wrapped the piano in a tarp in case of a leak, and waited for things to happen. The roof didn’t fly away, the power stayed on, and we got notice that we were to sail from Manhattan on Monday.

Ich hatte Geld für eine Wurzelbehandlung beiseite gelegt, aber dann musste der Zahn doch ‘raus, und das bezahlte die Versicherung. “Das Geld wird für etwas ausgegeben, das Spass macht,” beschloss ich. Im Frühjahr warb das Open Center für 7 Tage “Kreuzfahrt ins Paradies”, nach Bermuda, inklusive Unterricht in Yoga, Meditation, Vorträge zum Gesundwerden und - bleiben. In den letzten 10 Jahren habe ich nicht viel Urlaub gemacht. Die Vorstellung wegzufahren, ohne für Planung und Organisation verantwortlich zu sein, war sehr verlockend - mir war fast egal, wohin die Reise ging. Wie das Schicksal es wollte, war der Preis derselbe wie für die Wurzelbehandlung. Ich buchte die Reise, und bekam sogar noch einen Preisnachlass für meinen Volunteer- Job am OC.

Dann erschien Hurrican Irene am Horizont. “Bleib zu Hause, auch wenn die Reise nicht abgesagt wird,” schrieb ein besorgter Freund. Wir sollten letzten Sonntag abfahren, an dem Tag, als der Sturm in New York erwartet wurde. Ein wenig ratlos packte ich den Flügel in eine dicke Plane, falls es durchregnen sollte, und wartete. Das Dach ist nicht weggeflogen, sogar die Stromversorgung hielt durch, und wir bekamen die Nachricht, dass wir am Montag von Manhattan aus abreisen würden.

I’d never been on a cruise before, and I had no idea what to expect. A band was playing at the pool, as we got on board - would we have to listen to them 24/7 throughout the entire cruise? They did play a lot, but the ship offered enough get-aways even for people like me, who like it a little more quiet (unless they’re playing the piano themselves.) More than 2000 people of different ages and backgrounds all got to spend a wonderful vacation according to their respective tastes in peaceful coexistence.

Ich habe noch nie eine Kreuzfahrt gemacht, und hatte keine Vorstellung, was auf mich zukam, Als wir an Bord gingen, spielte eine Band am Pool - ob uns das wohl die ganze Fahrt lang anhören mussten? Die Band spielte viel, aber das Schiff bot genug Ausweichmöglichkeiten, sogar für Leute wie mich, die es gerne etwas ruhiger haben - (ausser wenn sie gerade selber Klavier spielen.) So verbrachten mehr als 2000 Passagiere verschiedensten Alters und Herkunft einen wunderschönen Urlaub in friedlicher Koexistenz, gemäss ihren jeweiligen Interessen und Vorstellungen .

Ich wollte, ich koennte diese Aussicht mitnehmen.

We enjoyed our state room, and the cabin stewardess surprised us with different “towel art” every evening. You could even take a course in how to make them.

Unsere Kabine gefiel uns sehr gut, und die Stewardess überraschte uns jeden Abend mit einem neuen Handtuchkunstwerk. Man konnte sogar lernen, wie man so etwas selber macht.

The “Norwegian Gem” was built in Germany in 2007. The ship took 18 months to build, and cost $ 50 million. It has room for 2300 passengers, plus about 1300 members of the crew. We marveled every day how well they handled everything, and how you run an enterprise like this in the first place.

Die “Norwegian Gem”, wurde 2007 in Deutschland gebaut. Die Bauzeit betrug 18 Monate, und das Schiff kostete $ 50 Millionen. Es hat Platz für 2300 Passagiere und 1300 Besatzungsmitglieder. Wir haben jeden Tag gestaunt, wie gut die alles im Griff hatten, und wie man solch ein “Unternehmen” überhaupt führen kann.

It’s a mystery to me how they calculate food for so much time for so many people - but that’s for sure: nobody ever had to go hungry.

Es ist mir ein Rätsel, wie man wohl das Essen kalkuliert - aber soviel ist sicher: niemand musste hungern.

The highlight was a chocoholic buffet the day we left Bermuda. I'd rather have stayed on the island a little longer...
Der Hoehepunkt war ein Schokoladenbuffet, am Tag als wir von Bermuda wieder abfuhren. Ich waere lieber noch etwas auf der Insel geblieben...

A different sense of time

As if to give me a sign, my watch stopped working the moment I walked on the ship. A different attitude towards time seemed to reign onboard - at least as far as the passengers were concerned. I found a deck chair and pretty much spent the first day looking out on the endless ocean, mesmerized by the motion of the waves and the play of the colors - sparkling silver, grey as lead, turquoise and dark blue, as if a barrel of ink had been poured into the water.

Ein anderes Zeitgefühl

Als wollt sie mir ein Zeichen geben, versagte meine Armbanduhr den Dienst, sobald ich an Bord ging. Man schien dort ohnehin eine andere Einstellung zur Zeit zu haben - wenigstens die Passagiere. Ich fand einen Liegestuhl an Deck und verbrachte den grössten Teil des ersten Tages damit, auf das endlose Meer hinauszusehen, verzaubert von der Bewegung der Wellen und dem Farbenspiel - glitzerndes Silber, bleigrau, türkis und dunkelblau, als hätte jemand ein Fass Tinte in die Wellen geschüttet.

I had wanted to attend classes, but I became engaged in the game “I’ll get up once we pass that cloud” - and then there was another, and another, and yet another cloud. It’s a game I can’t play at home, nor can I look out at the ocean. I realized I didn’t want to listen to anyone talk about health and well-being, while having the chance to sit outside and feel as well, healthy and happy as anyone could possibly feel. My body preferred an extended breakfast with my room mate over yoga at 8am . I had a slight sense of guilt for cutting meditation with the best teacher at the Open Center, but I also had the feeling that the best meditation teacher on the planet couldn’t teach you more about the subject than the ocean that surrounded us.

Ich wollte eigentlich das Lehrangebot des Open Center an Bord wahrnehmen, aber dann vergass ich die Zeit über dem Spiel” Ich stehe auf, wenn die nächste Wolke das Schiff überquert hat.” Es kamen immer neue Wolken, und es ist ein Spiel, dass ich zu Hause nicht spielen kann - ich habe auch keinen Ausblick aufs Meer. Warum sollte man glückliche und gesunde Realität gegen Vorträge eintauschen? Morgens um 8 hatte mein Körper noch keine Lust auf Yoga, und ich genoss lieber ein ausgedehntes Frühstück mit meiner Zimmerkameradin. Ich hatte winzige Gewissensbisse, die Meditation mit dem besten Lehrer des Open Centers zu schwänzen. Gleichzeitig hatte ich aber auch das Gefühl, dass der beste Meditationslehrer der Welt einem nicht mehr zum Thema beibringen konnte als das Meer um uns herum.

Bermuda welcomed us with thick grey clouds and pouring rain. I strolled around King’s Wharf, explored the Museum of Bermuda’ s history, and “Dolphin Quest” where you can swim with the Dolphins. I didn’t feel inclined to join, but found it fascinating to watch.

Bermuda empfing uns mit dicken grauen Wolken und strömendem Regen. Ich trieb mich in King’s Wharf herum, erkundete das historische Museum der Insel und “Dolphin Quest,” wo man mit Delphinen schwimmen kann. Es zog mich nicht ins Schwimmbecken, aber ich fand es faszinierend, zuzusehen.

Crystal Caves

The next day, our group took a trip to Crystal Caves.They were discovered by two young boys in 1907, when they tried to retrieve a lost ball. On the way there, our driver stopped at other places of interest.

Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir zu den Crystal Caves, einer Tropfsteinhöhle, die 1907 von zwei Jungen entdeckt wurde, als sie versuchten, einen verlorenen Ball wiederzufinden.
