If you’re traveling from New Jersey, the first surprise is, of course, if you’re going to get there and when. In order to make it in before well before rush hour, I had taken the bus at 2:45. Because of construction, the bus driver had to use a detour in order to get on the highway. We came to an intersection where I would have taken a left, but what do I know, maybe she’s planning to take a different ramp. Pretty soon we found ourselves back in Irvington, ready for a second attempt. We came to the same intersection, and even though no one was directing, everybody on the bus unanimously shouted “Left.” Fortunately, one of the passengers must have a car, because he knew the way and guided us safely to the Highway in East Orange. The trip took 90 minutes, instead of 40, but I didn’t have any appointments until later in the day, so it didn’t matter. For me, riding the bus is still the ultimate method of relaxation, - unless I’m sitting next to someone who is talking on the phone incessantly, has “Hard Rock” blasting out of his earphones, or hasn’t had a bath in a couple of weeks. In spite of that, while traveling on the bus I’m not being responsible for anything that happens, and that’s worth the occasional inconvenience.
Wenn man von New Jersey anreist, ist die erste Überraschung natürlich ob, und wann man ankommt. Um rechtzeitig vor dem Berufsverkehr da zu sein, hatte ich den Bus um 14:45 genommen. Wegen einer Baustelle war die übliche Autobahnauffahrt gesperrt. Eine Umleitung war angezeigt. Wir kamen zu einer Kreuzung, wo ich links abgebogen wäre, aber was weiss ich schon. Vielleicht wollte die Fahrerin ja eine andere Auffahrt benutzen. Sehr bald fanden wir uns wieder in Irvington, bereit zum 2. Versuch. Wir kamen an dieselbe Kreuzung, und obwohl niemand den Einsatz gegeben hatte, rief der ganze Bus unisono: “Links!” Einer der Passagiere muss wohl ein Auto besitzen, denn er kannt sich aus und leitete uns sicher auf die Autobahn in East Orange. Die Fahrt dauerte 90 Minuten anstatt der üblichen 40, aber da ich erst später am Tag Termine hatte, machte es nichts.
Für mich ist Busfahren immer noch die ultimative Entspannungsmethode - es sei denn, mein Nachbar telefoniert ununterbrochen, hört “Hard Rock” mit dem Lautstärkeregler auf Anschlag rechts, oder hat längere Zeit kein Bad mehr genommen. Trotz dieser kleinen Unannehmlichkeiten finde ich das Gefühl entspannend, für nichts verantwortlich zu sein, was auf der Fahrt passiert.
On the weekends, you can’t trust the subways in the city. They often run a different course, due to construction. Even as a pedestrian, you have to be prepared for unexpected obstacles. Always be ready for detours in Central Park - I had to walk quite a ways to avoid getting run over. By the way, if you’re interested in running the NYC Marathon, the application deadline is April 19th.
Am Wochenende ist der Subway in der City nicht zu trauen. Wegen Bauarbeiten werden die Linien oft umgeleitet. Aber auch als Fussgänger ist man vor unerwarteten Hindernissen nicht sicher. Im Central Park muss man immer auf Umleitungen gefasst sein. Ich musste ziemlich weit laufen, um nicht überrannt zu werden. Übrigens, falls sich jemand für die Teilnahme am New York Marathon interessiert, der Anmeldeschluss ist am 19. April.

This unusual menagerie was quite unexpected, interesting (mind the guinea pig), but also a little worrysome right on the corner of 6th Ave and Bryant Park - in fact, one of the passers by threatened to call the police.
Auf diese ungewöhnliche und interessante Menagerie - man beachte das Meerschweinchen - traf ich ganz zufällig. Der Standort and der Ecke 6th Ave und Bryant Park war leicht beunruhigend, und eine Passantin drohte damit, die Polizei zu rufen.
