Before the Outbreak of Spring / Bevor der Frühling ausbricht

I wonder whether it was an unconscious act of resistance that made me order yarn and a pattern for a cable knit sweater with spring just around the corner. Something to cuddle up in and feel cozy while a storm is howling outside, blowing rain or snow against the window panes. Something for those days I secretly love best of all, when the best place in the house is the sofa, with a mug of hot chocolate or tea, a good story, knitting and a cat or two. No need to go out and change the world. Just sit still and take it in as it is. Sometimes, I suspect that I’m a cave-person at heart…

“I hope you don’t get to wear it for a couple of months,” a well-meaning friend commented on the photo of the sweater that I posted on Facebook. Actually, the weather had the grace to grant me a few days with temperatures hovering around the freezing point, so I did get to wear it, before the sun sets out to melt the last patches of snow in the yard.

The white has gone dirty, but it’s the only bright spot between brown, withered grass and dried up branches. The tree tops show the first traces  of buds; promise that they’ll break out into canopees of leaves eventually that provide a shield from the heat of the summer.

They have their own beauty, but there’s something about the look of the bare branches against the inifinite sky that I’ll miss at first, then forget, then rediscover when the leaves fall to the ground late in the year.

Spring is the most unstable of all seasons. The days get longer, only to show more of the desolation winter has left behind. Winter is too tired to conjure up more glittering magic of ice and snow. A balmy day or two give way to frosty nights that freeze the first flowers. And the splendor of trees in blossom is as short lived as ice and snow.

It’s usually around that time that I succumb to the sprit of the season, hitch a ride to the Garden Center and buy flowers to replace last year’s meagre skeletons in the planters in front of the house. Beauty doesn’t last, so you’ve got to keep it coming…

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Schönheit vergeht - also muss man für Nachschub sorgen…

A Review of Winter / Ein Rueckblick auf den Winter

Today it’s official: Spring is here. In spite of the calendar, it seems not everybody got the message yet. Or do the owners of this house simply dare to live out openly what I feel secretly: do they prefer the winter over the summer, the fresh white snow over the scorching sun, the glorious beauty of the fall to the unrest of the spring?

I have to admit that I only took my Christmas decorations down last Sunday, when we put the clock ahead to summer time.

It takes me at least a week to adjust to the change, and things don’t feel quite right again until we get the lost hour back in the fall. While I’m still in transition, here’s a look back at some of the special moments of this past winter, using photographs I was planning to write blogs about, but never got around to it.

The big snow storm in December plastered the snow against the windows, giving the  apartment somewhat of an igloo-feeling. A good excuse to enjoy some quality time at home.

Others used the protection of a snow bank for an intimate conversation.

The snowstorm silenced traffic and pedestrians had the reign of the streets, even in New York City.

In Germany, the snow started to melt just around that time. This snowman, on my friend Mechtild’s balcony in Cologne, fell over on New Year’s Day and lost its face.

This photo shows a nativity scene made of chocolate, seen in the window of a fancy candy store in Muenster, Germany. I wonder whether anyone actually eats it, or whether it spends the rest of the year in a freezer, to reappear next holiday season.

There’s nothing like the magic of a winter sun rise,

Die Sonnenaufgaenge im Winter sind zauberhaft,

the trees looking like glass,
so wie die “Baeume aus Glass”,

the blue sky after an ice storm,
der blaue Himmel nach dem Eisregen,

and Central Park after a February snow.

I have to admit that it was nice to hear the birds twitter again this morning. During the coldest days of the winter, they seemed to have disappeared altogether, seeking shelter in unusual places, like this white dove, who I found in the South Orange Train Station in January.

There is something hopeful in the first flowers that appear between the debris of a storm

and the words that someone left in the snowbank by the bus station one day in the winter are something to remember in every season of the year:

Have a Happy Spring!
Beste Wuensche fuer ein froehliches Fruehjahr!

The other side of spring

In all its beauty, spring is the most unsettling time of the year.
There is the sudden burst of colors, changes every day,
and you don’t know where it may lead to.

As the light gets brighter, the shadows grow longer.

In order to see the new life, you have to look down at the earth.

You may find blossoms where you don’t expect them.

Beginnings.....

and endings.

People die, even though it is spring.
Life and death never seem closer together.

Messengers of Spring

I noticed the first flowers on Sunday a week ago by the bus stop, on my way to the choir concert.
At first, I thought it was plastic someone had thrown away.
Only when I looked closer did I notice that they were real, and they were all over the place.

Today: Crocus in the park

Cat, bird-watching in the window
and waiting for the air-conditioning to come on.

Happy St. Patrick's Day
