Accepting the Silence

There was the immediate, raw pain, right after the loss. I could still feel her in my arms. I cleaned away the food bowls from which she’d no longer eaten, and the littler box she hadn’t used in a long time. I could only do the basics, the most urgent, way too tired to do the major house cleaning I had pictured myself doing.
When I had finally gathered up enough energy, I found traces, that I didn’t even know were there - little paw prints on the bathroom floor. I wiped them away tenderly, a farewell each one of them.

Silence followed - the presence of her absence.

A week of vacation was left before I had to start teaching again. Just me and the silence in the apartment. The silence spread out and filled every space she had filled before.

Sometimes, I felt a slight sense of relief. The absence of her was also the absence of illness and decline, that were so painful to watch during the last months of her life.

I noticed one day that I’d stopped looking for her. I don’t know exactly when it happened, and it may not be permanent yet.

The first day of teaching without her was strange. I didn’t know how much she had occupied my mind, even when she was not in the studio. I wasn’t even aware that I rushed to check on her first thing every time I had a break, until I realized I didn’t have to do this any more.

“Fill the silence with beautiful sounds” wrote a friend. Music starts from the silence. You have to be aware of the silence, otherwise, you’re just making noise. You have to listen to the silence to sense the moment when the time has come for a new beginning.

-----------------------------------------

The Magic of the Nameless Prince/ Der Zauber des namenlosen Prinzen

If you’ve been living with cats for 30 years, a house without a cat feels twice as empty. I do want to give myself some time before taking in a new companion. Yet, I found it very comforting to check out websites of animal shelters, look at photographs and read stories, take some notes and start to put together a list of visits.

That’s what I wrote to my friend Clarinda Karpov, when she sent her condolences on Cappuccina’s passing. Clarinda is a playwright and animal rights activist; she and her partner divide their time between New York City and Omaha, where Dick teaches at college.

After Clarinda received my message, she answered as follows:

“Dear Birgit,

If you are looking at photos and stories of rescue cats, may I introduce you to someone very special?

I recently rescued some dogs who were to have been destroyed at NYC ACC (New York City Animal Care & Control, the city shelter).  And at the same time, I found myself moved to rescue an incredibly special cat who was about to be destroyed.  We brought him back to Omaha with us to foster.  The problem is, that Dick and I have fallen so in love with him that we couldn't imagine parting with him to let him go to another home -- although we have to, as our cat Lily doesn't tolerate other cats.  We want the very best and most loving home for him, and then we got your e-mail and we got goose-bumps, because we thought, "If Birgit would like him, she would give him the perfect home!"  I would like to tell you something about him, in case he "speaks" to you, because if he does, we would so love the two of you to be together.

First of all, I don't know how to tell you his name, because the name the shelter recorded for him, "Paprika," doesn't suit him at all, and we're working on finding him a poetic name to suit his quiet, gentle, poetical, spiritual, and above all, loving personality.  So affectionate!  Trying to keep the "Pa" sound, we experimented with Papageno, and we frequently sing, "pa, pa, pa, pa, PA" to him, but really, he's more of a Prince Tamino!  So we haven't settled on a name, and I think whoever adopts him should name him, once they get to know him.  So we address him by endearments, like "sweetheart."

The little one is probably a year to a year-and-a-half old, black, short-haired, very handsome, compact and elfin, graceful, with the most beautiful shining fur, so lovely to touch.  (He's quite irresistible to touch, and kiss, too.)  He has the most beautiful eyes, green-gold. He's spritely, and charming, and when he speaks, it's in a quiet musical chirp.  He is the most loving cat you can imagine, loves to cuddle.  When he greets you, he stands on his hind legs in an elegant undulation to receive your embrace.  I don't know how to do him justice.  He makes me think of The Magic Flute, or of a nature spirit or fairy.  And he's such a gentleman.  He quietly curls up by your side, whether you're at the computer, or practicing an instrument, or reading.  He is magic.

If this elfin prince would interest you, he would be an ideal teaching assistant, because he is so friendly and gentle and quiet.  He would be hospitable with everyone, including the children, yet tactful and discrete.  And so beautiful!  He would love all the opportunities to be petted by interesting and musical people of all ages.  And he would adore you, because you have that quiet, warm-hearted, spiritual energy, just like his.

We haven't put together a post for him for the rescue I'm associated with, because we haven't even wanted to post him for the general public.  We can't have him ourselves, because we have a full number of cats upstairs, and downstairs, where he is now, Lily the cat is on her own because she doesn't like other cats, and she's protesting.  We just felt that there was a destiny at work here, and that we would know what to do in due course. I don't want you to feel in any way pressed, but I must say that when we read your e-mail, it was a shock (in a good way!)--"Oh, could THAT be why I saved this little one??!!  Could he be Birgit's?"  If you find you like him, it would feel very meant-to-be!  If you think you might like him, we would drive him back to New York for you, probably in October, or at Christmastime.

Perhaps you might be the Pamina of this Tamino?

Love,
Clarinda, Dick & the Nameless Prince"

Even before I received photos on my cell phone, I had the feeling that this was a match made in heaven. Maplewood has an animal shelter, but since I’m a New Yorker at heart, what I really wanted was city cat! While preparing lunch, I began to think of a name.

'The little prince - a prince - the nameless prince, also fairy, a little mysterious. Merlin - but I already know two cats off the top of my head by the name of Merlin - Minou - a friend of mine once had a cat by that name or similar. What is "nameless prince" in some foreign language, Sanskrit, for example - and then I thought "Siddhartha."

Siddhartha was the first book I ever read by Hermann Hesse. I was 16 years old, and we read it in English class during my exchange student year in Glencoe, MN. I haven't thought of the book consciously in a long time but I remember that it left a deep impression on me.

The year in the US was the most formative year of my youth, the year that got me into music, and, as I keep realizing, a lot of other things, as well, so for me, it would be very meaningful to name my first little American cat "Siddhartha."

Clarinda described his response:

I was sitting on an ottoman, and he was on a desk chair some way away.  I gently called, "Siddhartha!" and he chirped inquiringly.  (He chirps questions with a rising cadence.)  I called again, "Siddhartha?" and he mewed back, "Yes?" Once more, "Siddhartha," and he leapt all the way onto my lap in a way he'd never done before!  Siddhartha knows his name, and he approves!

Something I wonder about--I wonder if it's at all possible that Cappuccina picked him out to take care of you.  It may not be impossible, because I'd been helping dogs, but one night, I felt I had to rescue cats, and when I looked at all the pictures of cats I just knew I had to save Siddhartha, without knowing why, or anything about him.  There wasn't any question, he was the one.  Is it possible that Cappuccina in some way was pointing with her paw and saying, "That's the cat who will take care of Birgit for me.  You have to save him, so that I can know that Birgit will be all right."  I like to think that may be true.

That evening, Clarinda told me on the phone. “You’ll hardly believe what I tell you now. I was doing e-mails at the computer, and Siddhartha came and did a little dance on the keyboard. Your message, telling us that you will adopt him, was about 10 messages away from the one I was working on. When he got down from the computer, not only had he scrolled back to that message, he had also flagged it!”

Clarinda and I met two years ago at the Open Center in NYC, where we attended a seminar on animal communication. It was the weekend in October when the annual blessing of the animals is held in many churches. Whatever it was that inspired Clarinda to rescue Siddartha, and me to write her that I was looking at websites with cats for adoption - sometimes, it does seem as if there was magic at work in the things you do, and the people you meet.

Clarinda schrieb mir, was er dazu sagte:
