A Thanksgiving Blessing of the Animals/ Segnung der Tiere zu Thanksgiving

Every year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving the Unitarian Church of All Souls in New York City opens its doors for a blessing of our four legged friends. You can bring a photo of those who are farther away, but all animals who are willing and able are welcome to the ceremony in person.

Jedes Jahr am Sonntag vor Thanksgiving (letzter Donnerstag im November) öffnet die Unitarische Kirche All Souls in New York City ihre Pforten für eine Segnung unserer vierbeinigen Freunde. Die weiter entfernt wohnenden lassen sich gern durch ein Foto vertreten, aber alle Tiere denen es möglich ist, persönlich an der Feier teilzunehmen, sind herzlich willkommen.

A special group to be honored are therapy dogs 

(like Casey on the photo) and -cats.

 All therapy animals and their owners 

have to go through a special training program and take a test 

before they are permitted to visit patients 

in hospitals and nursing homes.

Eine Gruppe, die besonders erwähnt wird, sind die Therapiehunde 

(wie Casey auf dem Photo) und -katzen. Alle Tier und ihre Besitzer müssen ein spezielles Trainingsprogramm absolvieren und eine Prüfung machen, bevor sie in Krankenhäusern und Pflegeheimen Patienten besuchen dürfen.

My friend Bill Edwards welcomed the congregation. He started the tradition of the Blessing of the Animals at All Souls years ago. He and his wife Margaret have been engaged in animal therapy with their cats for a long time. 
Bill shared an experience from a visit to a veteran's home with one of their cats. He described how a young man who suffered from severe PTSD started to ask question after question, once they put the cat on his lap. The patient's psychologist told Bill later that the young man hadn't spoken a single word up to then.

Mein Freund Bill Edwards hies die versammelten Menschen und Tiere willkommen. Er hat die Tradition der Tiersegnung in der Kirche vor Jahren initiiert. Bill und seine Frau Margaret engagieren sich schon sehr lange mit ihren Katzen in der Tiertherapie.

In seiner Ansprache Bill beschrieb ein Ereignis von einem Besuch in einem Heim für Kriegsversehrte mit einer ihrer Katzen. Ein junger Mann, der nach einem Kriegseinsatz an einem schweren Trauma litt, stellte eine Frage nach der anderen, sobald er die Katze auf dem Schoss hielt. Die Psychologin, die den Patienten betreute, erzählte Bill später er habe noch nie vorher ein Wort gesprochen.

Bill had planned to bring his cat Angelina to All Souls on Sunday, but he also sings in the choir. There wasn't enough time to return to New Jersey after the services in the morning to get the cat before the blessing in the afternoon. Also, he wasn't sure about Angelina's reaction to trumpets and kettle drums that are a part of of orchestra in Bach's cantata BWV 29 - "We thank thee, o Lord," and would have been a long day in the city for her. My cats Siddhartha and Genie Ramses stayed home for the same reason, but I had a photo of them, and  a few other animals I know

Eigentlich wollte Bill seine Katze Angelina am Sonntag mit in die Kirche bringen. Er ist aber auch Chormitglied, und wir sangen am Sonntag morgen in beiden Gottesdiensten, so dass nicht genug Zeit war, nach New Jersey zurückzufahren und Angelina zu holen. Der Chor und die Gemeinde waren zwar begeistert von Bachs Kantate BWV 29 - "Wir danken dir, Gott," aber Bill war sich nicht sicher, wie die Katze auf Pauken und Trompeten reagieren würde. Auch wäre es ein sehr langer Tag für sie geworden. Aus dem gleichen Grund blieben meine Kater Siddhartha und Genie Ramses zu Hause, aber ich hatte ein Photo von ihnen, und einigen anderen Tieren, die ich kenne.

Since I didn't have my own cats to watch over, I had the honor of tending to Leporello, while his mom, my friend Holly, helped with ushering.

Weil ich mich nicht um eigene Katzen kümmern musste, hatte ich die Ehre, Leporello zur Seite zu stehen, während seine Katzenmutter, meine Freundin Holly, bei der Platzanweisung half.

Most participants to the service arrived early for the blessing on Sunday, so they would have enough time for "meets and greets" and settling in.

Die meisten Teilnehmer an der Segnung kamen früh, damit genügend Zeit blieb, sich zu begrüssen und einen guten Platz zu finden.

Two soloists from the choir, Yekaterina Gruzglina, soprano, and Chloe Schaaf, mezzo-soprano, sang Rossini's Duet for Two Cats. Unfortunately I don't have a recording of their performance.

After all the animals - those present in person and on those on the photos - received this traditional Celtic blessing, the animals and their humans left the church. On our way out we ran into one of the custodians. "Now it's time to get the vacuum cleaner," he said. 

Und dann war es Zeit, aufzustehen und sich zur Segnung nach vorne zu begeben. Nachdem der traditionelle keltische Segensspruch über alle Tiere und alle Photos gesprochen worden ist, begaben sich Tiere und Menschen zum Ausgang. Auf dem Weg begegneten wir einem der Hausmeister: "Ich gehe jetzt den Staubsauger holen," sagte er zu uns.

und ich frage mich, wovon er wohl trauemt, waehrend er auf meinem Exemplar von Bachs Wohltemperiertem Klavier schlummert.

Meine Schueler muessen oft mit ihm verhandeln, wer den Klavierstuhl bekommt,

and it may take some persuasion, until he agrees to settle down on the other piano bench on the side. From there, he will follow the lesson attentively.

und es bedarf oft einiger Ueberredungskuenste, bevor er sich auf der zweiten Klavierbank niederlaesst. Von dort aus folgt er dann aufmerksam dem Unterricht.

Last Saturday, New York’s Classical Radio Station WQXR sponsored an 18-hour organ marathon at St. Peter’s church in New York City, featuring J.S. Bach’s complete organ work, performed by organists from the Juilliard School. I would have loved to go into the city and attend some of it, but I had a performance myself the following morning, so I had to stay home and practice. In the evening, I watched two of the concerts, which were streamed live on the internet.

Soon, Siddhartha came and took a seat on the coffee table, where I had set up the laptop. He placed himself in the first row, so to say. And here’s his reaction to the event.

Letzten Samstag veranstaltete WQXR, New Yorks Radiosender fuer klassische Musik, einen 18-stuendigen Orgel-Marathon mit Bachs gesamtem Orgelwerk  in der St Peter’s Church in New York City. Es spielten Organisten von der Juilliard School. Sehr gerne waere ich selber in die Stadt gefahren und haette mir einige der Konzerte angehoert. Da ich aber Sonntag morgen selber ein Konzert hatte, hielt ich es fuer geraten, daheim zu bleiben und zu ueben. Die Orgelveranstaltung aus New York wurde live auf dem Internet uebertragen, und abends sah ich mir einen Teil davon am Computer an.

Nach kurzer Zeit gesellte sich Siddhartha zu mir, setzte sich auf den Tisch, wo ich den Computer aufgestellt hatte - in die erste Reihe, sozusagen - und hier ist seine Reaktion:

Mein zweiter Kater, Genie Ramses (auf dem Foto mit Staubtuch) ist mehr an technischen und athletischen Akitvitaeten interessiert. Der Klaviertechniker wird beim naechsten Besuch den Daempfer wieder geradebiegen muessen, den Genie Ramses versucht hat, aus dem Fluegel zu ziehen...

 My friend Bill Edwards, who has a lot of experience with cats through his work in cat therapy, had suggested that Genie's foster parents rub him down with a towel and send it to us before his arrival, so that Siddhartha could get a sniff. This can facilitate the adjustment of the two cats.

Mein Freund Bill Edwards, der durch seine Arbeit mit Katzentherapie viel Erfahrung mit den Tieren hat, hatte geraten, dass Genie's Pflegeeltern den Kater mit einem Handtuch abreiben und es uns vor seiner Ankunft schicken damit Siddhartha schonmal den Geruch aufnehmen kann. Dies kann dabei helfen, die beiden Tiere aneinander zu gewoehnen.

Die beiden waeren nicht mehr am Leben, wenn sie sie nicht aus dem Tierheim in New York adoptiert haette.

Siddhartha and Genie are getting adjusted. There is a little bit of a personality conflict. Genie Ramses, now 5 months old, was picked up as a kitten with his mother as a stray. He is very confident, an alpha male if there ever was one, a kid who takes what he wants. You don't have to bond with him, he'll bond with you, and he's as cuddly as could be, purring all the time.
Siddhartha, supposedly 4, but we don't think he's more than a year old, lost his home when he was surrendered by his owner. He has a hard time standing his ground; if Genie wants to sit on the cat tree, he'll just let him. He's very affectionate, but sometimes appears a little sad over having to share his human and his toys. The fact that Genie always beats him at "crinkle ball"- because he's so much smaller, flexible and faster, doesn't exactly help to boost Sid's confidence either, even though he's better with the cat dancer - and so much bigger and stronger. But looking at the two cats bird-watching together makes me hopeful that they'll become good friends.

Siddhartha und Genie Ramses sind dabei, sich aneinander zu gewoehnen. Die Temperamente sind unterschiedlich, Ramses, 5 Monate alt, und seine Mutter Gina wurden als streunende Katzen aufgegriffen. Er ist sehr selbstbewusst, und nimmt sich was er will. Er freundet sich auch unaufgefordert mit einem an, und er ist ein Schmusekater, der die ganze Zeit schnurrt.
Siddhartha, andgeblich 4, wahrscheinlich aber 1, hoechstens 1 1/2 Jahre, hat sein Zuhause verloren. Er wurde von seinem Besitzer ins Tierheim gebracht. Er hat etwas Schwierigkeiten, seinen Stand zu wahren, wenn Genie auf dem Kaztenbaum sitzen will, laesst er ihn einfach. Er ist sehr anhaenglich und liebevoll, aber manchmal ein bischen traurig weil er nun seine Menschin und seine  Spielsachen teilen muss. Die Tatsache, das Genie ihn beim Ballspielen schlaegt, weil er so viel kleiner, schneller und wendiger ist, hilft auch nicht gerade, Siddhartas Selbstbewusstsein zu staerken, obwohl er besser mit dem "Cat Dancer" ist. Aber wenn ich mir die beiden bei der morgendlichen Vogelbeobachtung am Fenster ansehe, habe ich den Eindruck, dass die beiden gute Freunde werden koennen.

Gina is a sweet and quiet lover, gentle, gracious, affectionate, and wise beyond her youth. (She may be as young as a year to 1 year old.) Gina is spayed, tested, and current on vaccinations. Gina prefers a quiet household, suited to her quiet, peaceful ways. She would probably prefer a home without dogs or young children, and with a limited number of other cats. (Ideally, Gina would love to be an only cat, but she's willing to make concessions!)
