THE STREET PIANOS ARE BACK ! / DIE STRASSENKLAVIERE SIND WIEDER DA!

When I accidentally found the information on the internet, I couldn’t believe it at first: The street pianos are back! 88 of them, all over New York City, between June 18 and July 2nd 2011. And here’s some additional good news: the one at Alice Tully Hall has developed from an upright last year to a grand piano this year. The decor is gorgeous, and the artist has refrained from coloring the keyboard - thank you so much for that! Unfortunately you can’t put up the music stand, so you need to bring your own, or tape the music to the lid.

Juli 2011.

Alice Tully Hall Piano 2011
Another grand piano is located inside the Rubenstein Atrium on 62nd and Broadway, if you prefer a quieter, more concert like atmosphere - in fact, I’m going to play Preludes and Fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier there tomorrow from 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
Last Wednesday, some friends and I gathered at the Alice Tully Hall piano for a little impromptu birthday concert. Having a birthday at the beginning of summer is no guarantee for good weather. Fortunately the overhang from the building kept us dry during a heavy downpour just as people were arriving.
"Chopsticks"
I showed Vika how to play chopsticks. Marcia and I played Moszkowki’s “Spanish Dances,” followed by some music from Manfred Schmitz’ “Jazz Parnass.” As it turned out, Vika, who grew up in St.Petersburg Russia, knew all the melodies - her teacher Ljuba Boruchson had taught them at Childrens’ Music School. “ Heaven knows where she got them, and how she got away with it,” Vika said. Jazz didn't go over too well with the Soviet regime.

Two young people who had been standing off to the side with a large camera came up to us and introduced themselves. They were following the Street Piano event with their recording equipment in order to produce a feature for Japanese Television. Would we be willing to give an interview? What did we think of the event?

I wished we could have the pianos around all year. Wouldn’t it be great to have “Public Music Rooms”, a musical equivalent to the “Bryant Park Reading Room,” where you can sit down, pick up a book from the shelf and read.
Bryant Park Reading Room
A “Public Music Room” would give you a chance to just go and play a little, or sit there and listen, while you wait at the airport, at the hospital, during lunch break at work, when you need to relax or blow off steam after some unpleasant event at the office. Libraries provide public access to computers - how about public access to pianos?
Visitors at our Impromptu Concert

Of course, there is music playing from loudspeakers everywhere, but playing yourself, or listening to someone play live music is not the same. The energy is different, it’s a “soul-to-soul” connection.
Visitors at our Impromptu Concert
While Marcia and I were playing, we hadn’t noticed two people who had been watching us for some time. “I think they might want to play something,” said my friend Carsta, who had been taking pictures.
She was right. After we invited them to the piano, they delighted everybody with the most beautiful Chinese songs. The evening ended on an international note, with an impromptu vocal ensemble, consisting of people from the US, Russia, China and Germany singing Russian folk songs.
International Impromptu Vocal Ensemble

Reflections at the end of the school year / Überlegungen am Ende des Schuljahres

When I got home on Saturday, a friend from Germany who teaches violin had left a message on the answering machine that expressed exactly how I felt: “ My students just played their recital last night, I feel I can breathe again, and make phone calls and look forward to the summer..” No matter where you live and what you teach, it’s the same everywhere.
The big “crescendo” towards the end of the school year started almost a month ago, when my first two students played in the auditions of the New Jersey Music Educator’s Association. It was a “first time” for me, too. When I worked at music schools, we always had our own auditions, and  you knew the expectations, the people on the jury. This time, I had no idea what would happen.
I felt many students' preparations were juggling between “overcooked” and “underprepared”, which is a common situation before recitals.  It’s often difficult to keep pieces “fresh” over an extended period of time. The music feels “old.” The expression goes flat, and all that’s left are fingers. Everything gets faster - when you’re between 10 and 14, it’s hard to find the break anyway. One student found it helpful to invent a story to go with her piece, which helped her renew the emotional connection to the music.
Others get started too late, and find themselves cramming notes into their system until the last minute. It’s amazing what some people can accomplish in a short time, and you just wonder how they would play if they managed to keep up the energy throughout the entire school year.
In the end, it all came out well - with everybody getting “superior” or “outstanding ratings, there were no complaints. I had volunteered to help out with organization on the second audition date. I was asked to put the rating sheets into the mailing envelopes, so I got to read many mindful and constructive judges’ comments, while listening to a lot of excellent playing coming from the classrooms.
Friday evening, we had our end-of the-year recital. Focus one more time - and then, it’s suddenly all over.

Throughout the year, I had kept a practice chart for the students - for every day of practicing, you get a practice point. For 20 points you get a certificate, for 100 you get a little gift, and then you aim for the next 100...

The practice chart may not be totally accurate. Some students started lessons later in the school year. People forget to check off, or they loose their notebooks. It’s not meant to be a competition either. Considering that the students with the highest practice scores all received “Outstanding” ratings at their auditions, it illustrates that practicing is useful.

Practice Champion was Kenny - with 223 days of practicing during the 36 lesson weeks
“Do the points we collected this year carry over into the next year?” one student asked. No, they don’t. In the fall, we start all over, to give everyone a fresh chance to improve, especially if this year wasn’t such a good practice year.

The Judge’s Dilemma / Das Dilemma des Jurors

I read the judge’s comments from my student’s audition and I was puzzled. She received an “Outstanding”  - the second best grade- for her performance, but apart form that, he didn’t have a lot of positive things to say about her playing. Basically, it boils down to the fact that she plays correct notes, but devoid of any expression. So, how does that go together with the grade?
At her lessons, I experience her as a very musical student, who phrases naturally, has good hand balance after only a year of lessons. A while ago, she came and played the beginning of Bach’s C-major Prelude from WTC I by ear, which she had heard her mom play at home, and frequently, she invents her own pieces.
The way we play tends to match our personality. “Still waters are deep”, as they say, and I do have to encourage her often to play loud enough and project the dynamics clearly, not only hint at them.
It’s very possible that the unfamiliar situation intimidated her to a point where she just withdrew into herself, and her playing was, in fact, reduced to the bare notes.

I’m very happy she received an “Outstanding,” because that’s what she deserves. Maybe the judge sensed that. At the same time, the comments are phrased so negatively that I summed up the essence, but I didn’t read them to her.
A long day of judging can be demanding, and it is often hard to find the proper words in the short time available, with the next student already waiting outside. You hear the student only once, and you have to evaluate what you hear at that particular moment.
An audition is a snapshot of a given situation. It doesn’t necessarily reflect the big picture - whether you’re a constant practicer, who has learnt a considerable amount of repertoire throughout the year, or whether you’re just a skilled last-minute learner who knows how to present himself.
Regardless of that, it is good to get a qualified opinion on your playing from someone other than the teacher, who hears you every week. Auditions give students a goal to work towards. They can be a valuable experience, if they are understood as another step in the learning process, rather than an absolute judgement of your playing.

A visit to Concord

When Bob St Laurent, one of my former adult students at the Concord Community Music School was playing his recital two years ago, I was sitting in my empty apartment in Concord, waiting for the moving truck to arrive.  As it turned out, I could have comfortably attended the recital, because the movers didn’t show up until the evening, 6 hours behind schedule.

Concord Community Music School, Concord, NH

Bob’s recital this past weekend fit my schedule much better, it was just a little farther to travel. Sharing the performance with his four-hand partner Mary Wirth, the two pianists had chosen and all-Schubert program.

Bob started it with the Sonata in A-major D 665. The piece is full of lyrical phrases and poetry, but pianistically, it's somewhat awkward to play. Bob made it all work, with beautiful voicing and control of the sound. Following the Sonata, Mary played two Impromptus from D 899 with great sensitivity and expression.

During the second half of the program the two pianists performed the f-minor Fantasy, one of the gems of the four hand repertoire. It had been the favorite piece of Harriet Ward, Mary’s former duet partner, who passed away a couple of years ago. Harriet was a most dedicated student and supporter of the Music School, still taking lessons when she was 80. Bob and Mary dedicated the performance to her, and memories of her came alive to the sounds of this moving and profound piece.

The reception after the recital was a wonderful opportunity to catch up with colleagues, friends and former students.  Molly and Rosemary had just returned from “Sonatina” , a piano camp for adult students in Vermont. Jane has worked up her way from Bartok’s “For Children” and Bach’s Little Preludes to Mozart Sonata, and Lynn is exchanging her Clavinova for a “real” piano.
It’s so wonderful to see how everybody continues to play, enjoy and explore music and support each other in the community of the music school. As a private teacher, I sometimes miss that special energy of people coming together in the same place at the same time to do the same thing. For my current students, I hope our monthly performing classes can activate some of it.

Celeste, Hanna, Mita and Athy at a performing class at my studio.
My former student Pat has turned from classical piano to Jazz, and every other week, she plays in the lobby of Concord Hospital for an hour. On Monday, before I left, I got a chance to stop by and listen for a moment.
What an experience to enter a hospital lobby and be welcomed by the sounds of live music! A few people sat down to listen, and I saw a lot of smiles on the faces of those who passed by on their way to other parts of the building.

Pat, playing in the lobby of Concord Hospital

I wished they could have heard yesterday’s concert - and what a great performance opportunity! If the hospital and the music school came up with a joint project, I’m sure many people would appreciate it.

Raccoon on the Roof / Ein Waschbär auf dem Dach

In the seven years I spent in New Hampshire, I haven’t seen a single wild animal. In Maplewood, NJ, where I live now, just 20 miles from New York City, you don’t even have to leave your house in order to get your share of wildlife.
Monday morning around 5 am I woke up from a big ruckus in the back yard. My landlord’s two dogs were barking and running around restlessly. I got up and peered out the kitchen window into the darkness. At first, there was nothing, and then, suddenly, I saw him, walking across the roof in front of the kitchen windows, less than a yard away.
The striped tail and the black and white mask unmistakably identified the raccoon. They’re cute as stuffed animals and very photogenic, but this one was quite large and infused more respect than anything else. I didn’t have the nerve to reach for the camera. Instead, I pulled down the windows quietly and quickly.
After he had reached the end of the roof, he had turned around and was now making his way back towards the tree he must have climbed up to get to the roof. He was crouching close to the wall under the window, and I could see the tips of his ears. I wondered what he was up to. Would he stand up on his hind legs and look me straight in the face? Could he break through the screen and make his way into the apartment?

View from the kitchen window /

My teacher suggested he could, and I better leave those windows closed. He has a lot of experience with raccoons in his summer house in Maine - they’ve even inspired him to write stories and piano pieces for children about them. (Seymour Bernstein, Raccoons Book I   Part 2 )
(Seymour Bernstein, Raccoons Book I   Part 2 )

Julian, who also spends her summers in Maine, said they would only try to come in if they smelled food. Can a raccoon smell a banana in a bowl on the kitchen table? Jeanne, who volunteers for the Wildlife Center  here in Maplewood, suggested he was just passing through on the way home.

One of the squirrels who spent the winter with Jeanne before being released into the wild again in the spring.

“He wants to move in,” wrote my friend Ursula, who had just visited from Germany the week before. I’m not sure.  I haven’t seen the raccoon(this link has photos and an audio) again, but I think I’ve heard him a couple of times early in the morning. He’ll have to work on his manners before Cappuccina and I might consider his application. We do prefer visitors who ring the bell and come in through the front door in broad daylight.

Squirrels often come for a visit on the roof, here is one in conversation with Cappuccina.
